How to Clean and Store Adult Toys Safely

A simple, material-aware routine: what to clean, how to dry, and how to store products so they last.

Updated October 4, 2026

Before first use

Clean a new product before using it, and read the leaflet that comes with it. Some powered products have specific instructions for charging and for keeping water away from the motor or charging port.

Cleaning silicone, TPE and soft materials

Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser with warm water, then rinse thoroughly. TPE and other porous materials need extra attention: clean immediately after use and make sure the material is completely dry before storage.

Do not boil, microwave, or use harsh solvents unless the product leaflet explicitly states it is safe. If you are unsure, use a dedicated toy cleaner and follow its directions.

Cleaning metal and hard plastics

Metal and hard plastic surfaces are easy to wash with mild soap and warm water or to wipe clean. Dry fully. On powered products, wipe the housing with a damp cloth only and keep water away from controls, seams, and charging points.

Powered products and charging

Charge according to the product instructions. Allow the product to dry completely before charging. USB charging ports should be kept clean and dry, and cables should be stored separately so they do not pull on the port.

Drying and storage

Air-dry on a clean, lint-free surface before putting anything away. Store products separately, ideally in a pouch or container, away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not store soft materials pressed against each other for long periods.

Lubricant compatibility

Water-based lubricant is compatible with silicone, TPE, and soft materials. Silicone-based lubricant can affect silicone and soft surfaces, so check the product guidance first. Clean lubricant residue after use so it does not attract dust.

Replacing porous products

Porous materials such as TPE hold onto residue over time. Replace them periodically, or sooner if the surface becomes tacky, discoloured, or difficult to clean. Silicone, metal, and hard plastics generally last considerably longer with good care.
