How to Choose a Vibrator: Types, Materials and Features

Types, materials, charging, water resistance and controls explained, so the feature list on a product page actually means something.

Updated October 4, 2026

Types of vibrator

Most vibrators fall into a few practical shapes. Classic vibrators are slim and simple. Dual-head or dual-function designs add a second point of stimulation. Wearable and harness formats are designed to stay in place. Compact formats prioritise travel and storage.

The shape should follow how you plan to use it. If you are choosing your first vibrator, a slim, quiet design with a small number of modes is usually easier to learn than a large multi-function product.

Materials

Silicone is the most common choice: smooth, durable, and easy to clean. Some dual-head products pair a silicone surface with ABS plastic housing for structure. Metal finishes feel firm and polished and are simple to wipe clean.

Check the material listed on the product page and choose a water-based lubricant with silicone products.

Power and charging

Rechargeable products list a charging method such as USB charging. Battery-powered products use replaceable batteries. Manual products have no motor at all.

Where a product page lists charging or power, it comes from confirmed source data. If it is not listed, it was not confirmed.

Water resistance

Water-resistant products are easier to clean and more forgiving around water. Products that do not list water resistance should be wiped clean and kept away from water and heat.

Controls and modes

Simple button controls, remote controls, and app control all appear in the catalogue. Mode counts, where listed, are taken from the product source. More modes is not automatically better; a design you find intuitive is easier to use.

Cleaning and storage

Clean your vibrator before first use and after every use, dry it fully, and store it separately from other products. Follow the leaflet included with your item for product-specific instructions.
